Dear Students and Colleagues

Cholera cases are now on the increase with isolated cases reported in Harare, Masvingo, Manicaland, Midlands and Mashonaland Central. This is a reminder to follow hand hygiene practices, and to consume safe food and water. Our institution is home to people coming from various parts of the country which have been affected by the cholera outbreak. Let us practice strict hygiene, particularly in our restrooms and in handling our food and water.

Cholera infection is often mild or without symptoms, but can sometimes be severe. Approximately one in ten (10%) infected persons will have severe disease characterized by profuse watery diarrhea, vomiting, and leg cramps. In these people, rapid loss of body fluids leads to dehydration and shock. Without treatment, death can occur within hours.

The basic cholera prevention tips include;

  • Drink and use safe water - Boil it or treat it with a chlorine product or household bleach.
  • Wash your hands with soap and running water
  • Cook your food thoroughly and eat while it is hot
  • Wash your fruits and vegetables under running water
  • Avoid shaking hands at public gatherings including funerals

Should you suspect that you have cholera visit the clinic immediately or alert any health officials near you.
