The National University of Science and Technology (NUST) has officially opened its Harare Branch Library at ZIMDEF House, marking a significant milestone in the University’s continued efforts to expand access to quality academic, research and digital resources.
The new branch, designed as a smart, inclusive and research-oriented academic library, brings NUST’s knowledge ecosystem closer to students, researchers, academic staff and the wider academic community in Harare. It combines a physical book collection with access to e-books, scholarly databases, digitised research materials and remote digital services, providing a more responsive and accessible learning and research environment.
The establishment of the branch also responds to the evolving needs of NUST’s growing Harare academic community by reducing geographical barriers to information, learning support and research assistance, while strengthening the connection between the Harare branch and the wider NUST Library system.
The official opening was presided over by University Council Member, Ms Katherine Nyachionjeta, who officially declared the facility open on behalf of the NUST Council and had the honour of checking out the branch’s first book—a symbolic first transaction representing the many future moments of discovery, learning, research and innovation that the branch will facilitate.
Speaking at the occasion, University Librarian, Mrs Cynthia Sharon Ncube, emphasised that “The Harare Branch is more than a physical space. It is a new access point to the NUST knowledge ecosystem, bringing together people, information, technology, research support and learning.”
The branch is strategically positioned to support NUST’s Education 5.0 ambition by strengthening teaching, learning, research, innovation and community engagement. It initially supports programmes in areas including the Faculty of the Built Environment, the Graduate School of Business Sciences, the Faculty of Medicine’s Department of Health Information Management and programmes offered through the Centre for Continuing Education.
Through its digital-first approach, the Harare Branch will also support research discovery, scholarly communication, information and AI literacy, academic integrity and access to emerging technologies ensuring that NUST students and researchers are equipped to navigate an increasingly digital knowledge environment.
The establishment of the Harare Branch Library is therefore a significant step in strengthening NUST’s presence in the capital and advancing the University’s commitment to equitable access to knowledge, research excellence, innovation and national development.
NUST Library extends its sincere appreciation to the University leadership, Council, staff and all stakeholders whose collective commitment and collaboration made this important milestone possible.
