From NUST Alumnus to Global Screens: Courage Nyoni's Innovation Journey

A 2024 Civil and Water Engineering graduate from the National University of Science and Technology (NUST), Courage Nyoni, is proving that innovation can emerge from the most unexpected circumstances.

What began as a simple idea during the COVID-19 lockdown has evolved into a globally recognised digital innovation. Nyoni's educational mobile application, the Lobola Calculator, has attracted thousands of users worldwide and recently gained international exposure after being featured on a Japanese television programme broadcast on Nippon TV.

During the lockdown period, while many people grappled with uncertainty, Nyoni chose to invest his time in learning computer programming through online tutorials. Armed with determination and courage, he taught himself Android app development, laying the foundation for a journey that would eventually place Zimbabwean innovation on a global stage.

The result was the Lobola Calculator, an interactive application designed to educate users about the African cultural practice of lobola (bride price) while providing a light-hearted estimate based on various social and cultural factors. Since its launch in 2020, the app has recorded more than 17,600 downloads worldwide, attracting significant interest from users across Europe and other regions eager to learn more about African traditions.

Reflecting on the app's success, Nyoni says the experience taught him that passion and persistence can overcome even the steepest learning curves.

"Looking at the success of this app serves as an invaluable lesson in life that we can pretty much do anything as long as we put our minds and hearts into something. I had little to no expertise in Android app development when the idea came through, but through dedication, countless hours of learning and a few sleepless nights, I found my way. That experience continues to motivate me in every challenge I undertake."

While the Lobola Calculator introduced him to the world of software development, it was his experience at NUST that transformed his innovative thinking into practical solutions.

"The curriculum at NUST is highly adaptive and consistently keeps pace with a rapidly changing technological landscape," said Nyoni.

"From first year, every student is introduced to computer systems. In Engineering, our Introduction to Computer Science module did more than teach programming; it fundamentally changed the way I approach problem-solving."

According to Nyoni, NUST's interdisciplinary approach encouraged students to bridge traditional engineering principles with modern technology, inspiring them to create solutions for real-world challenges.

This mindset led him to develop the Brickwork Calculator, a specialised application designed to automate complex material calculations for the construction industry. The tool assists engineers, builders and contractors in quantifying building materials accurately and efficiently.

Today, Nyoni is working closely with NUST's Department of Civil and Water Engineering to further develop both the Brickwork Calculator and a new Concrete Mix Design App, demonstrating his commitment to creating practical digital tools for the engineering sector.

The international recognition of the Lobola Calculator reached new heights when it was featured on Nippon TV in Japan. The programme explored marriage traditions across Africa and used Nyoni's innovation as an example of how technology can preserve and promote cultural knowledge in the digital age.

For Nyoni, however, the journey is about more than downloads and media attention. It is about embracing the innovative spirit cultivated at NUST and using technology to solve everyday problems.

His message to current students and fellow alumni is:

"Dream bigger and never stop pushing forward. There is nothing beyond our reach. We have had the distinct honour of walking through the avenues of NUST. That experience gave us far more than an education; it equipped us with the resilience, creativity and innovation needed to take on the challenges of the world. Wherever we go, we must continue to do what NUST taught us best: keep thinking in other terms."

From self-taught programmer to internationally recognised innovator, Courage Nyoni's story is a testament to the power of curiosity, determination and the transformative education that NUST provides.
