NUST Students Excel Beyond the Lecture Rooms

Bulawayo — The National University of Science and Technology (NUST) continues to make notable strides not only in academics, but also in sports development, aligning with Zimbabwe’s Education 5.0 philosophy that promotes holistic education combining teaching, research, innovation, community service, and industrialisation.

In recent sporting achievements, NUST student golfer Mashia Phiri emerged victorious at the MSU@25 Golf Tournament held on 12 July 2025 at Roland Park Golf in Zvishavane. Her performance highlighted both individual excellence and institutional presence in competitive golf. Similarly, NUST staff member and President of the Matabeleland Ladies Golfers Association, Sakhile Ndiweni, was recognized for her outstanding achievement in the Longest Drive category, showcasing how NUST personnel continue to lead by example in sport.

In another major development, two top-performing NUST student athletes, Rutendo Vushe and Zvarebwanashe Mukwaturi, have departed for Germany to represent Zimbabwe at the 32nd FISU World University Games, taking place in Rhine-Ruhr from 16 to 27 July. Their qualification follows dominant performances at the 2025 ZUSA and ZTISU Games, where they each secured three gold medals in sprinting and tennis, respectively.

NUST’s investment in sport is not simply about competition—it reflects the institution’s belief in the value of physical activity as part of comprehensive student development. By blending intellectual rigor with athletic discipline, NUST supports students in cultivating leadership, resilience, and global competitiveness.

University officials say these victories are more than individual triumphs—they are part of a broader commitment to elevate sport as a key pillar of personal and national development. This dual focus on academics and athletics reinforces NUST’s mission to produce well-rounded graduates ready to excel both in the classroom and beyond.

“University support for student sport is crucial for fostering student well-being, academic success, and community engagement. It provides opportunities for physical activity, mental health benefits, and the development of valuable life skills like teamwork and leadership. Furthermore, it enhances overall satisfaction with their university experience,”
— Judith Siziba, NUST Sports Director.

“International competitions and recognitions provide students with a valuable platform to showcase their talents, gain exposure to global perspectives, and develop crucial skills for their future careers. These opportunities enhance their resumes, boost professional visibility, and open doors to scholarships, internships, and networking opportunities. Furthermore, participation fosters personal growth, motivation, and confidence, preparing them for the challenges of a globalized job market.”
— Judith Siziba, NUST Sports Director.

As the Education 5.0 framework continues to shape higher education in Zimbabwe, NUST is positioning itself as a leader in merging knowledge with practical life skills—on the pitch, in laboratories, and on international podiums. Sports at NUST are not just an extracurricular activity, but an extension of excellence.
