The Chief Director in the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Mr Jonathan Gandari, has hailed the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) as an institution that is producing leaders who are shaping Zimbabwe's media and broadcasting landscape.

Speaking during the Annual Broadcasters Conference 2026, hosted by the Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe (BAZ) in partnership with NUST, Mr Gandari said he was impressed by the significant presence of NUST alumni occupying leadership positions across key institutions in the broadcasting sector.

"Just by seeing the lineup that is here today, I am tempted to say that NUST is where leaders learn. The leaders present at this esteemed conference are products of NUST," said Mr Gandari.

He was referring to several NUST alumni serving in senior leadership roles, including the Deputy Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Dr Omphile Marupi; the Acting Chief Executive Officer of BAZ, Engineer Matthias Chakanyuka; the Chief Operations Officer of Transmedia Corporation, Engineer Rufaro Zaranyika; and the Chief Operating Officer of the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC), Engineer Tapiwa Mudzamba.

Mr Gandari was standing in for the Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Dr Zhemu Soda as the guest of honour of the Annual Broadcasters Conference.

Addressing delegates, NUST Vice-Chancellor Professor Mqhele Dlodlo highlighted the university's longstanding contribution to national development and industry.

Professor Dlodlo noted that since graduating its first class in 1995, NUST has maintained a strong industry-oriented approach, becoming the pioneer of industrial attachment programmes in Zimbabwe.

He added that the university has made a significant contribution to strengthening Zimbabwe's media ecosystem through the introduction of its Bachelor of Science Honours Degree in Journalism and Media Studies, which continues to produce skilled media practitioners and leaders for the sector.

The two-day conference, which has brought together broadcasters, regulators, academics and industry experts, is being held under the theme: "Sustainability, Innovation and Collaborative Regulation in a Disrupted Media Landscape."

The conference seeks to explore strategies for enhancing the sustainability and competitiveness of the broadcasting sector while fostering innovation and collaborative approaches to regulation in an increasingly dynamic media environment.
