HARARE, 6 November 2026 – The National University of Science and Technology (NUST) is this weekend hosting the inaugural Joshua Nkomo Sports Science and Physical Activity Conference at the Cresta Lodge in Harare.
Running under the theme “Synergy in Physical Culture: Integrating Indigenous Knowledge, Science and Digital Futures in Sport and Physical Activity," the three day conference brings together sports scientists, academics, researchers, practitioners and other stakeholders to exchange knowledge, share research findings and explore new approaches to sports science and physical activity.
Jointly organised by NUST's Department of Sports Science in partnership with the Joshua Nkomo Legacy Restoration Project Trust and the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education the conference has attracted local, regional and international delegates.
Opening address
In a speech read on his behalf to officially open the conference, NUST Vice Chancellor Prof. M. Dlodlo said innovation should not mean abandoning heritage. Instead, he said, indigenous knowledge should be examined with curiosity and respect, with attention to how science can strengthen its contribution.
Prof. Dlodlo said the name of Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo gives the gathering a purpose beyond academic achievement. "His legacy of unity, peace and service calls upon us to bridge differences between institutions, communities and generations," he said.
He urged delegates to pursue scholarly excellence alongside fair access to the benefits of movement and physical activity.
Conference programme
Over the three days, participants will discuss a wide range of topics, including:
- Physical Education pedagogy and the role of school sport in developing character, leadership and lifelong excellence
- The status of aquatics in Zimbabwean schools, and evidence-based approaches to physical activity, fitness and population health in Africa
- The integration of sports technology, education and human development in building sustainable high-performance sporting systems
- Talent identification, athlete load monitoring, coaching practices, skill acquisition, strength and conditioning, and performance analysis
- Athlete health, sleep, recovery and resilience, with a focus on evidence-based strategies for optimising performance
Bridging research and practice
The conference is intended to close the gap between scientific research and practical sporting experience. It also explores how indigenous knowledge, technological advancement and innovation can contribute to the future of sport in Zimbabwe and beyond.
