The Department of Earth Sciences at the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) stands as the premier institution for all Geoscience education in the country. This interdisciplinary field encompasses various sub-disciplines including geology, geophysics, geochemistry, meteorology, seismology, and environmental science. Established to support Zimbabwe's robust extractive sector, the department offers comprehensive undergraduate and postgraduate programs, including a Bachelor of Science Honours in Earth Science, specialized Master’s degrees in Geophysics and research based studies both at Masters (MPhil) and PhD levels. The curriculum is designed to integrate theoretical knowledge with practical field applications, focusing on the unique geological setting of the Zimbabwe. Students engage in rigorous coursework involving geophysical exploration, structural geology, petrology, and geochemistry, often utilizing advanced spatial technologies like Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing to map and analyze subterranean structures. The department collaborates with local and international institutions in order to enhance its research capacity and teaching activities.

Geothermal Potential Exploration in Zimbabwe: This group aims to integrate multi-disciplinary geosciences specifically geophysics, geochemistry, and structural geology to identify, map, and characterize untapped subsurface geothermal resources in Zimbabwe. The group focuses on reducing upfront drilling risks by refining structural, thermal, and hydrogeological models to accurately locate heat sources and fluid pathways by advancing computational modelling, seismic imaging, and electrical resistivity techniques optimized for deep, high-temperature reservoir detection.
Sustainable Resource Management Program: Aimed at developing sustainable practices for resource extraction (such as minerals and water) while minimizing environmental impact.
Natural Hazard Research: This group studies geological hazards like earthquakes, droughts and floods to improve prediction models and risk assessment and mitigation strategies.
Groundwater Exploration: Applied Geophysical and Hydrogeophysical Research to enhance water security throughout Zimbabwe and beyond.
