Welcome to the Department of Finance and Fiscal Sciences

Welcome to the Department of Finance and Fiscal Sciences. The Department was established as the Department of Finance at the inception of the National University of Science and Technology in 1991 before it was stemistised into the new name in the year 2023.

Aims of the Department

  • Education and Research: Provide high-quality industry-oriented education in the three fields of the finance discipline, namely Finance, Financial Engineering and Fiscal Studies.
  • Global Participation: Deliberately involve and abreast students with international best practices through global research competition participation such as the CFA Research Challenge Competition and other international networks.
  • Financial Literacy: Enhance financial literacy among students and the business communities within our vicinity.
  • Industry Collaboration: Foster partnerships with financial institutions and experts as well as liaise with industry through earmarked MOAs.
  • Policy Analysis: Research on financial markets and fiscal policies, and regulations to produce policy briefs.
  • Ethics and Responsibility: Emphasize ethical behaviour and social responsibility in Finance discipline.
  • Entrepreneurship and Innovation: To encourage entrepreneurial thinking and innovation in financial services. This includes exploring new technologies, business models, and financial products.
  • Research Risk Management: To educate students about risk assessment, risk mitigation, and financial stability.

Role and Contributions

The Department offers two undergraduate programmes specialising in Finance and Fiscal Studies as well as three postgraduate programmes specialising in Finance and Investment, Financial Engineering and Fiscal Studies. The Department also offers research-based postgraduate programmes at Master of Philosophy and PhD levels focused on any of our three pillars of specialisation. The Department boast of mutual associations with the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) and Ba Isago University in Botswana, whose relationships are managed through signed MOAs between NUST and these external partners. This has helped the Department in information exchange and collaborative teaching and learning. Additionally, our programmes have benefited immensely from our external industry partners whose experts are part of the Department Advisory Board membership. The current Board was constituted in 2022 comprising mainly experts in our three areas of specialisation who are hands-on industry practitioners in three countries; Zimbabwe, the USA and Mauritius.

Employment opportunities vary depending on the area of specialisation. Finance graduates normally find their way into financial advisory services, portfolio management, and financial risk management roles, in addition to the generic financial operations and management roles within financial and non-financial organisations; financial engineering graduates mainly go into financial products designing roles to suit particular financing needs or project funding while fiscal studies graduates get into tax advisory services, customs operations and management at country, regional and international levels as well as tax collection and management roles in country and regional tax or customs administration bodies or their agencies as well as running their businesses with a bias towards these fields.
