Whether you are a student, Faculty, or curious visitor we extend a warm welcome. The Banking department was established at the inception of the National University of Science and Technology in 1991.

Aims of the school

  • Education and Research: Provide high-quality education in Banking, Finance, and economics.
  • Financial Literacy: Enhance financial literacy among students and the community.
  • Industry Collaboration: Foster partnerships with financial institutions and experts.
  • Policy Analysis: Conduct research on economic policies and regulations.
  • Ethics and Responsibility: Emphasize ethical behaviour and social responsibility in finance.
  • Entrepreneurship and Innovation: To encourage entrepreneurial thinking and innovation in financial services. This includes exploring new technologies, business models, and financial products.
  • Risk Management: To educate students about risk assessment, risk mitigation, and financial stability.

Role and Contributions

The Department offers a menu of programs at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, built on global and regional developments in Banking and Investment management a well as Economics.A close association with the Institute of Bankers of Zimbabwe in the formative years, as well as the internship programs by the University, infused a unique slant to teaching, with graduates, literally, hitting the ground running.

The program has benefited immensely from partners in the form of the Industrial Liaison Committee, which provides an essential link with the world of employment growth and skills demand. The department serves as the driving force behind the Institute of Development Studies, as the initial programs were incubated within the Banking Department.

Employment opportunities have mainly been in branch operations, credit analysis, treasury and dealing operations as well as business.

Bachelor of Commerce Honours in Banking and Investment

The Bachelor of Commerce Honours Degree in Banking and Investment Management provides theoretical education in the field of banking and management of investments.  The rapid growth of banking and financial services in the modern economy has created a unique requirement for a specialist academic program in the area, encompassing bank operations management, credit analysis, treasury operations, and relationship management.

Entry Qualifications

Candidates must have the following qualifications:

  • Five (5) Ordinary Level passes including English language and Mathematics (A, B, or C grades).
  • Advanced Level passes in Economics and any one of the following: Accounting, Business Management or Mathematics.
  • There is also a provision for special entry targeting mainly practicing bankers with Dilpoma qualifications in Banking or Finance.

Bachelor of Commerce Honours in Economics and Econometrics

ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS

To qualify for normal entry into the proposed Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) degree in Economics & Econometrics, a candidate, in addition to satisfying minimum conditions as prescribed under the General Regulations and Faculty Regulations for five (5) Ordinary Level passes including at least a C-grade in English Language and at least a B-grade in Mathematics.

 

Prospective students must have passed Economics and any other commercial subject at Advanced Level. A pass in Advanced Level Mathematics will be an added advantage.

 

Prospective students should be in possession of a laptop with a minimum of the following specifications:

Core i3 processor ,7 generation, Windows 10 Operating system, 4GB of RAM with 500gb hard drive

There may also be provision for mature entry for students who may not satisfy some of the normal entry academic requirements but have relevant post-school experience and recognized diplomas such that they may satisfy the University and the Department of their ability to complete the proposed degree programme satisfactorily.

PRE-REQUISITES

For the proposed Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) Degree in Economics & Econometrics, a candidate must have passed the core first year modules in economics before they can be allowed to register for the following modules:

  1. A candidate must have passed CEC 1104 (Economic Principles I) before proceeding to CEC 2104 (Microeconomics I)
  2. A candidate must have passed CEC 1201 (Economic Principles II) before proceeding to CEC 2204 (Macroeconomics I)
  3. A candidate must have passed CEC 2104 (Microeconomics I) before proceeding to CEC 4103 (Microeconomics II)
  4. A candidate must have passed CEC 2204 (Macroeconomics I) before proceeding to CEC 4203 (Macroeconomics II)

Our Staff

Mrs. Sindiso Mpofu

Sindiso Mpofu, a Lecturer in the Department of Banking and Economic Sciences, brings a wealth of academic experience to the Faculty of Commerce. As an alumnus of the institution, Sindiso holds an MSc in Banking and Financial Services, a Postgraduate Diploma in Higher Education, and a B Com Honours in Banking.

Her research interests span critical areas such as Financial Inclusion, Microfinance, Investment Banking, and the dynamics faced by Micro-Entrepreneurs. Sindiso has contributed to scholarly discourse by publishing in several journals.

Beyond her scholarly pursuits, Sindiso is deeply committed to teaching, mentoring, and fostering growth in both young men and women within the department. Inspired by Maya Angelou’s wisdom, her life mantra is: “There is no failure as long as you learn from your experience, continue to work, and press on for success.”

Sindiso’s unwavering dedication extends to empowering women through education and economic independence. She advocates for gender equality and believes that every woman deserves equal opportunities to thrive. Additionally, Sindiso is on a path to achieve the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) qualification. Having already passed the Level I and II examinations, she exemplifies resilience and determination. With over 15 years of experience in the field, Sindiso Mpofu’s relentless determination and multifaceted contributions make her an invaluable asset to our academic community.

Dr Simon Muwando

Dr Simon Muwando is a Lecturer in the Banking and Economic Sciences. He is member of Higher Degree Committee, Faculty of Commerce and Examiner in this Faculty. Off-campus, he is the Vice chairman of Basic Education Assistance Module (BEAM) Committee of  Manondwane Primary School and SDC member of the St Nimrod 4 Primary and Secondary group of Schools in Bulawayo.

He is a holder of a PhD in Finance Degree with the University of Lusaka in Zambia. He holds a Master of Science Degree in Finance and Investments, Bachelor of Commerce (Hons) Degree in Banking, Postgraduate Diploma in Higher Education and Diploma in Credit Management. He has certificate of competency in Big Data (general level). He has supervised and mentored limitless postgraduate and undergraduate students, and contributed to the undergraduate and postgraduate modules of both a research-led and a methodological nature.

 Dr Muwando has published various articles on e-banking, inflation, foreign direct investment, debt management, and country risk analysis and management. His research areas of interest encompass corporate finance, development finance, asset pricing, investment analysis and management, financial engineering, country risk analysis and management and technological innovations in banking.

Mr S.O. Dhlamini

Mr. Stevenson Okuhle Dhlamini serves as a Lecturer in the Department of Banking and Economic Sciences within the Faculty of Commerce at The National University of Science and Technology (NUST) in Zimbabwe. His academic journey includes roles as a Teaching Assistant at NUST from November 2007 to 2011, followed by his current position as a full-time Lecturer since 2011.

Mr. Dhlamini brings a wealth of experience to his role, having worked as an economic analyst and provided extensive consulting services to government, civic, and private sector organizations. His expertise centers around advising on policy and strategic economic matters, utilizing data-driven analysis to promote public policy and economic justice.

As a dynamic presenter, Mr. Dhlamini excels at conveying complex analyses in an accessible manner. His educational background includes an MSc in Banking and Financial Services from NUST, a B.Comm Honours in Economics from MSU, and a Diploma in Credit Management from ICMZ.

Mr. Dhlamini’s leadership and involvement extend beyond the classroom. He has served as a Faculty of Commerce Representative and contributed to the Career Guidance Committee. Additionally, he played a pivotal role in aligning the Department of Banking program with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and was instrumental in introducing the degree in Economics and Econometrics at NUST.

Inspired by thought leaders like Michael Porter, Mr. Dhlamini is committed to innovative, impact-focused work. His outgoing personality and ability to bring people together around critical issues contribute to shaping strategic decision-making and promoting equitable solutions.

Mr Gift Benzile Nyathi

Gift Benzile Nyathi, a lecturer in the Department of Banking and Economic Sciences, joined the department in June 2023 after serving as a Teaching Assistant in other sister universities for over three years. His teaching portfolio includes courses in Quantitative Methods, Computer and Statistical Analysis, Research Methodology, and Monetary Economics.

Mr. Nyathi’s impressive qualifications encompass:

Mr Tendekayivanhu Mutambanadzo

Tendekayi Mutambanadzo holds a Bachelor’s degree in Banking, Masters degree in Banking and Financial Services and a Post Graduate Diploma in Higher Education. He is a seasoned Lecturer and is also the Industrial Attachment Coordinator.

Mr Lawrence D. Nyathi

Mr Takaivona Vhimisai

Takaivona Vhimisai is a Lecturer in the Department of Banking and Economic Sciences, and has served the University in various capacities since 2005. Besides contributing towards the writing of the NUST Student Handbook, he has represented the Faculty of Commerce in a number of Committees including, but not limited to, the Timetable Committee, Career Guidance Committee, ZITF Committee and the NUST/ZIPAM Board. He spearheaded the introduction of the Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) in Economics & Econometrics, the first of its kind in Zimbabwe, as well as the rebranding of the Department’s two flagship degree programmes to Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) in Banking & Investment Management and Master of Science in Banking & Financial Economics. Beyond NUST, Mr Vhimisai has contributed towards quality assurance in the tertiary education sector by serving as external examiner/assessor for a number of higher education institutions in Zimbabwe.

Mr Vhimisai holds a Master of Science in Banking & Financial Services, Bachelor of Commerce (Hons) in Banking and a full Institute of Bankers of Zimbabwe Diploma. He is an Associate member of the Institute of Bankers of Zimbabwe.

He has co-authored and published a number of research papers in peer reviewed journals. For that reason, Mr Vhimisai’s expertise in research has contributed to the advancement of knowledge not only through his own publications but also by serving as a reviewer of several manuscripts for a number of academic journals. His research interests are bank safety nets, climate finance, informal modes of finance, money laundering & illicit financial flows, and small business growth and development.

 

Dr. Jonathan Tembo

Dr Jonathan Tembo is a distinguished academic and finance professional with a profound background in business management, banking, and financial services. He joined the Department of Banking and Economic Sciences as a Lecturer in 2011 and holds a Doctor of Commerce Degree in Business Management, earned from the University of South Africa in 2018 and a Master of Science Degree in Banking and Financial Services from the National University of Science and Technology. His doctoral thesis examined regional financial integration and its impact on the development of the financial sector in Southern Africa. Dr Tembo is currently a postdoctoral research fellow in the Department of Finance and Investment Management at the University of Johannesburg, where he actively engages in independent research, collaborating with peers, teaching, and providing guidance to students in research supervision. His courses range from Governance and Sustainability, Risk Analysis and Management, Applied Treasury Management, Financial Modelling and Data Analysis for Research. His research expertise extends to areas such as regional integration, mobile money, financial development, and bank failure. He has secured various research grants, including the prestigious BANKSETA Higher Education Grant in 2022. Dr Tembo`s research output is evident in numerous journal publications and conference presentations. Beyond the classroom, Dr Tembo has made significant contributions as an External Examiner for the University of South Africa and the Management College of South Africa. He has also been involved in the IDEP Certificate Migration Policy, Free Movement, and Regional Integration within the Context of Covid and AFCFTA, showcasing his commitment to broader academic and policy initiatives.

Mr Thomas Bhiri

Mr. Thomas Bhiri, a lecturer in the Department of Banking and Economic Sciences, has been an esteemed member of the Faculty of Commerce since 2011. He actively participates in community initiatives. As a member of the Committee on Association Status and Affiliation since 2015, he has been involved in shaping community relations and fostering collaboration.

Mr. Bhiri imparts his wealth of knowledge to students across multiple departments. Through engaging lectures, he equips students in the Departments of Banking and Economic Science, Construction Economics and Management, and Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering. His teaching portfolio covers diverse subjects, including Money and Banking, Banking and Financial Markets, International Banking, Principles of Microeconomics, Principles of Macroeconomics, Business Studies, Banking Information Systems, and Bank Operations and Strategy.

Mr. Bhiri serves as the Co-Patron of the Banking Students Association and the Microfinance Club. His mentorship extends beyond the classroom, as he guides students participating in the Chartered Financial Analyst competitions, collaborating closely with colleagues in the Finance Department.

He holds impressive qualifications, including a Bachelor of Commerce in Banking, a Master of Science in Banking and Financial Services, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Higher Education.

His scholarly endeavours include supervising over 50 undergraduate research projects and more than 20 postgraduate research projects. Additionally, Mr. Bhiri has published two research papers in the Journal of Emerging Trends in Economics and Management Sciences and two research papers in the Global Journal of Commerce and Management Perspective.

Mr Proud Sibanda

Mr. Proud Sibanda joined the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) in August 2011, working in the Bursars Department as an Assistant Accountant. Later, in 2023, he transitioned to the Faculty of Commerce, where he became a Lecturer in the Banking Department. Currently, he holds the position of Monitoring and Evaluation Coordinator.

During his tenure at the Bursars Department, Mr. Sibanda was responsible for financial planning, preparation, and control of the university’s consolidated self-funding budgets. With over 20 years of extensive experience in Finance and Accounting, he possesses comprehensive knowledge of the investment market. His research interests include Development Finance, Financial Inclusion, and Corporate Governance.

Mr. Sibanda is a full member of the Chartered Governance and Accountancy Institute of Zimbabwe and an associated member of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators of Zimbabwe (ICSAZ). Additionally, he is a Registered Public Accountant with the Public Accountants and Auditors Board (PAAB) and holds the RPacc certificate. Furthermore, he has earned a Master of Science Degree in Finance and Investments (MSc) and a Bachelor of Commerce (Hons) Degree in Finance.

Miss Emely Sango

Miss Emely Cynthia Sango, a Lecturer in the Department of Banking and Economic Sciences, also serves as the Exams Coordinator within the same department. She boasts an impressive academic background, including a Master of Science in Banking and Financial Economics and a Bachelor of Commerce (Hons) with a specialization in Banking and Financial Modelling. Additionally, she holds a Valuation Analyst certificate.

Miss Sango’s research interests span several critical areas. She is passionate about Women Empowerment, aiming to create positive change and opportunities for women. Her focus also extends to Microfinance, recognizing its potential to uplift marginalized communities. Furthermore, she delves into Financial Inclusion, seeking ways to ensure that financial services are accessible to all segments of society.

Mr Emmanuel Sibanda

Emmanuel Sibanda is a Lecturer and a researcher in the Department of Banking and Economic Sciences, National University of Science and Technology. In the lecturing position, Emmanuel teaches several courses including microeconomics and macroeconomics. Before joining the National University of Science and technology, Emmanuel worked for Meraki Market Research and Digital Republic as a Data Analyst.

He has been involved in consultancyy covering Zimbabwean manufacturing sector surveys and impact of statutory instruments on the manufacturing sector, and further involved on a short term consultancy covering the chapter on climate change and education for the Zimbabwe Human Development Report 2017, a United Nations Development Program initiative. He holds BSc. and MSc. in Economics, both from the University of Zimbabwe. 

Emmanuel specializes in applied econometrics. His research interests include economic development, SME, microeconomics, macroeconomics and technological adoption by farmers in Africa. Emmanuel has further supervised numerous undergraduate dissertations and currently serves as an examinations coordinator in the Department of Banking and Economic Sciences and in the termination of studies committee in the Faculty of Business Sciences.

Dr Sydney Machokoto

Dr. Sydney Machokoto is a lecturer in the Department of Banking and Economic Science. He joined the department after serving as a part-time lecturer at NUST from 2013 to 2014 and again since 2020. Additionally, he has taught at Catholic University and Lupane University. His extensive teaching experience spans both secondary and tertiary education levels.

Dr. Machokoto previously held the position of Head of Commercial Subjects and served as the District Supervisor for Commercial Subjects in the Ministry of Education, Sports, and Culture. Between 2000 and 2004, he worked as the Chief Examiner of Business Studies at the Zimbabwe Schools Examination Council. His responsibilities included setting and marking examination questions, as well as training examiners.

In terms of academic qualifications, Dr. S. Machokoto holds a PhD in Economics, an MCom in Economics, an MSc in Banking and Financial Services, a Masters in Business Administration, and a BSc in Economics. He has also completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Education and Part D of the Chartered Institute of Secretaries (CIS) qualification.

Beyond the classroom, Dr. Machokoto has mentored numerous students at both the postgraduate and undergraduate levels. His wealth of experience in teaching and learning has uniquely positioned him to guide learners in their career paths. Additionally, he serves as the Owner and Director of Superlink Haulages. His primary interests lie in economic modeling, transport economics, and imparting knowledge and skills related to entrepreneurship.

Mr A Nyathi

Abania Nyathi has been a university lecturer for a combined period of over 20 years, most as a full time member of the Department of Banking and Economic Sciences at NUST. He has also taught in at least five other universities across three countries. Mr Nyathi has held several university positions ranging from Coordinator to Chairperson to Acting Dean, and has sat on several committees and boards including at management level. He spearheaded the formation of the Banking and Economic Sciences Advisory Board.

Mr Nyathi holds a Master of Science in International Securities, Investment and Banking, aka Masters in Finance (Reading University, UK); Bachelor of Commerce (Hons) degree in Finance (NUST, ZW), Postgraduate Diploma in Higher Education (NUST, ZW). He is a Chevening scholar (1997/1998), a Registered Public Accountant in Zimbabwe (RPAcc-Z), a Chartered Certified Accountant (Global), a Chartered Governance and Accountancy (Global) professional, a member of the Institute of Bankers of Zimbabwe and a member of the Institute of Credit Management in Zimbabwe.

His research interests in banking and finance include Stock market development in emerging markets, alternative ways of funding for Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the global south, Financial systems and Economic growth, Endowment funds.

His experience as a development banker, consultant and broad subject expertise in banking and finance-related areas are invaluable for students as he is able to blend theory and practice in his lectures

Mr Lawrence Ncube

Lawrence Ncube, a dedicated lecturer in the Department of Banking and Economic Sciences, brings a wealth of expertise to his role. His impressive qualifications include a Master’s degree in Banking and Financial Services, as well as a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) degree in Banking. Beyond his formal education, Mr. Ncube has earned additional certifications, demonstrating his commitment to continuous learning: Certificate in Basics of Business (UNISA). Certificate of Proficiency in Retirement Funds Trusteeship (COP) from the Insurance Institute of Zimbabwe (IIZ)Certificate in Payroll Administration from the Zimbabwe People Management Institute (IPMZ)

Mr. Ncube’s research interests span critical areas within the financial landscape: He has delved into the complexities of lending to new farmers without collateral, a crucial topic for sustainable agricultural development. His work explores the impact of transitioning from a Defined Benefit Pension Scheme to a Defined Contribution Scheme (DB-DC), shedding light on pension fund management.

In addition to his scholarly pursuits, Mr. Ncube boasts over 20 years of practical experience in accounting, finance, payroll, and pension fund administration. His insights bridge theory and real-world application, enriching both his teaching and research.Before assuming his lectureship role, Mr. Ncube served as the Deputy Bursar, overseeing Finance and Administration at the same university. His passion for research extends to cutting-edge areas, including the performance evaluation of pension funds and the influence of Artificial Intelligence in the financial services sector.

Mr Tsepeso Setoboli

Tsepeso Setoboli holds the position of a lecturer in the Department of Banking and Economic Sciences. His association with the department began in 2023, following a career as a researcher in various organizations. Currently, he serves as the department’s Research Coordinator.

Within the classroom, Tsepeso Setoboli imparts knowledge in Micro and Macro-Econometrics, as well as Agricultural Economics modules. Beyond the confines of the classroom, he is deeply committed to addressing intricate societal challenges through research. His areas of focus include agriculture, environmental policy, natural resource management, socio-economic development, and trade.

Tsepeso Setoboli holds a Master of Science in Agricultural and Applied Economics, along with a Bachelor’s Honors Degree in Agricultural Economics and Extension.

Mr Joseph Munetsi

An inspirational Economics Lecturer and educational researcher, offering 7 years’ progressive experience in the expansion and oversight of academic programs, policies, and initiatives to promote student success and achievement.

Exhibits senior leadership experience having served numerous students across multiple schools, coupled with profound expertise in the development, implementation, evaluation, and continuous improvement of challenging and inspiring curricula. A passionate education advocate, successful in driving university wide research; directing student experience programs to meet the needs of university students; and building top performing teams exclusively committed to the academic success of each student. Currently working as a full-time lecturer with previous academic appointments as a Tutorial Assistant and Part-time lecturer, holding an MSc in Banking and Financial Economics and BCom Honors Degree in Banking with a single publication with Academia.

Praxedes Mindu

Praxedes Mindu, currently serving as the Senior Secretary in the Department of Banking and Economic Sciences, has a rich history at the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. Let’s delve into her journey.

In 2004, Praxedes joined NUST as a Temporary Fulltime Secretary in the Department of COMA (Communication and Media Arts).

By 2005, her dedication and skills led to her appointment as a full-time Senior Secretary in the Library Department, where she contributed for a period of two years.In 2007, Praxedes made a significant move to the Department of Banking, where she continues to serve to this day.Beyond her administrative role, Praxedes is a seasoned non-academic staff member with a fervor for entrepreneurship.Her core values include hard work, integrity, excellent communication, dependability, and reliability.

Praxedes holds a B. Com (Hon) Degree in Business Management from NUST, Bulawayo, Zimbabwe.She also earned a Diploma in Management from the same institution.Additionally, she completed a National Diploma in Secretarial Studies at Bulawayo Polytechnic College.
