Mrs Yevonnie Chauraya: Department of Nursing and Midwifery Sciences

·    Mrs Yevonnie Chauraya is a nurse educator, researcher, midwife, medical-surgical nurse and paediatric nutrition nurse who is in the final stages of a PhD program in Child Health and Nutrition with the University of Pretoria. She is also engaged in various paediatric nursing courses with the University of Cape Town, The Harry Crossley Children’s Nursing Development Unit. Mrs Yevonnie Chauraya is registered with the Nurses Council of Zimbabwe. In addition to being the Department substantive Chairperson, she is also a lecturer in the department. She has keen research interest in maternal and child health issues as well as adolescent care and nutrition, and has published articles in these areas. Currently, Mrs Yevonnie Chauraya is co-authoring research in midwife led maternity care at a tertiary institution in Zimbabwe whose focus is on comparing the benefits of midwife led care on uncomplicated maternity cases to obstetric led care and supervises research projects for students in the department. She has been a national marker for General Nursing examinations at the Nurses Council of Zimbabwe for 2 seasons.  Mrs Yevonnie Chauraya has also developed new modules and courses in nursing and midwifery for various programmes offered in the Faculty of Medicine. As a Chairperson, she has also spearheaded the development and accreditation of a new programme (Bachelor of Science Honours Degree in Nursing Sciences (Normal Entry) at NUST. Which is a programme that recruits prospective nursing students straight from Advanced Level. Previously, the focus of nursing programmes in the department had been on postgraduate nursing students wishing to advance in Midwifery.

·        Mrs Yevonnie Chauraya joined NUST in 2018 as a lecturer in the Department of Nursing and Midwifery Sciences and became the substantive Chairperson in 2021. Before joining NUST, she was a senior nurse educator at a school of nursing housed in the second largest referral central hospital in Zimbabwe. Focus was on medical-surgical nursing, child health and research. She attained Masters in Medical-Surgical Nursing from the University of Zimbabwe, Bachelor of Science in Nursing Sciences (Nursing Education) from the Zimbabwe Open University, has a Diploma in Midwifery, Diploma in General Nursing, international certificate in paediatric nursing in the hospital and in the community from Dina Academic School of Nursing, Petach Tikva, State of Israel. Certificate in Paediatric Nutrition from Boston University, United States of America and several other certificates in nursing, midwifery and paediatrics and Good Clinical Practice. As well as the Occupational Safety Health Environmental Management Course Certificate from National Social Security Authority (NASSA).

·    She is a member of nursing and midwifery associations in Zimbabwe such as Nurse Educators Association in Zimbabwe, Zimbabwe Nurses Association, Zimbabwe Confederation of Midwives and ECSACON and is a team member of the Best Practice Project at Mpilo Central Hospital Paediatric Hospital organized and led by University of Cape Town.

Dr Mayibongwe Louis Mzingwane: Department of Pathology

Dr Mayibongwe Louis Mzingwane is a registered Clinical virologist with the Medical Laboratory and Clinical Scientists Council of Zimbabwe. He is also registered with the Health Professionals Council of South Africa as a Biological scientist (virology).  His research interests are in HIV cure, antimicrobial drug resistance, molecular epidemiology of infectious diseases and HIV co-infections were he has published articles in peer reviewed journals and presented at various international scientific fora focusing on HIV reservoirs and viral persistence during antiretroviral therapy. Currently his focus is on characterization of emerging arboviruses of public health and animal health concern in the face of climate change using metagenomic next generation sequencing. The research seeks to use pathogen genomic data for rapid detection of emerging and re-emerging arboviral infections and map the disease landscape as climatic conditions continue to change. In addition to teaching undergraduate students and research, he also teaches post graduate students including supervision of post graduate research projects. He has also examined post graduate projects and dissertations from various institutions of higher learning as external examiner. He has also developed new modules and courses in medical microbiology for various programmes that are offered within the faculty including Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, Nursing and Midwifery sciences and Biomedical sciences. His expertise also covers specialist diagnosis and surveillance of infectious diseases using molecular technologies.

 

Dr Mzingwane has been with NUST since 2006 starting off as a Staff Development fellow in the Division of Basic medical sciences. Prior to coming to NUST, he worked for 5 years in a local leading pharmaceutical company as Senior microbiologist responsible for quality assurance in the production of critical care medical and pharmaceutical products. He received a PhD in Medical virology from the University of Pretoria, an MSc in Medical microbiology from the University of Zimbabwe and a post graduate diploma in Higher education and BSc in Applied Biology and Biochemistry from NUST. He has won various grants, awards and fellowships including the International AIDS Society (IAS) Research-for-Cure Academy Fellowship, HIV Research Trust Scholarship and was third award winner at the inaugural Merck Africa research awards that were held in Switzerland. He is a full IAS member and also a Contributing member of the American society for Microbiology.
