Department of Anatomy and Physiology

About The Department of Anatomy and Physiology
The Department of Anatomy and Physiology consists of the:

Anatomy section – teaches anatomical sciences to undergraduate and postgraduate medical and health sciences students. This section introduces students to the basic principles of embryology, histology and a deep appreciation of body structure essential to their learning of health and practice.

Physiology section – teaches physiological sciences to undergraduate and postgraduate medical and health sciences students. In this section, students develop a fundamental knowledge of the functions and processes that create life and how these processes are disrupted in the presence of stress and disease.  The Physiology section is also actively involved in research aimed at deepening the knowledge of mechanisms of body functions; which underpin the development of good health practice, drug development and disease management.

Department of Community Medicine

About The Department of Community Medicine

The Department of Community Medicine teaches principles of primary health care, nutrition, environmental and occupational health and safety, biostatistics and epidemiology, research methodology, maternal and child health care, health education and promotion, basic concepts and principles of public health and global health, communicable and non-communicable diseases as well as patient safety. Students are given the necessary exposure to community medicine and primary health care through attachments to rural and urban primary health care facilities. They are attached to provincial, district and mission hospitals to appreciate community medicine in rural settings. Additionally, they are attached to local, urban council clinics and infectious disease hospitals to gain a critical understanding of the management and control of TB, HIV and other communicable diseases.

About The Department of Nursing and Midwifery Sciences
Departmental Vision: The Department of Nursing and Midwifery Sciences places importance on advancing science through producing nurse/midwife practitioners and educators with world class excellence and expertise in research, evidence-driven clinical practice, innovative teaching, leadership  and management including advocacy  and policy change.

Departmental Mission: The aim is to contribute positively towards the reduction of maternal and infant morbidity and mortality as well as promotion for healthy life styles throughout the life cycle of individuals and their families. 

The Department of Nursing and Midwifery Sciences was established in 2013 to train both undergraduate and postgraduate nursing and midwifery related programmes. Currently the Department offers a Bachelor of Science Honours Degree in Midwifery on Block Release instruction. The degree programme is designed to build upon and enhance midwifery practice; it also supports career pathways for the midwife in clinical practice, education, research as well as leadership and management.
The Department of Nursing and Midwifery Sciences also offers a Master of Midwifery Education Degree on an 18-months full time programme. Graduates of the Master of Midwifery Education Degree have opportunities to work in the midwifery training institutions within the public and private sectors including NGOs; they can also work as university lecturers and research consultants, policy advisors as well midwifery experts nationally and internationally.

About The The Department of Pharmacology and Biochemistry
The Department of Pharmacology and Biochemistry consists of the:

Biochemistry section – offers a preclinical introduction to the chemical basis of life; the structure, interaction and function of biological molecules which underpins biological processes and mechanisms of disease. Current research in this section encompasses the mechanisms by which plant-derived bioactive compounds and extracts exert their antidiabetic effects and the methods of transdermal and oral insulin delivery.  

Pharmacology section – provides preclinical and clinical pharmacology education with the aim of training health practitioners on the origins, properties and effects of drugs on living systems. Research in this section encompasses a broad range of fields focusing on drug discovery and therapeutics.

Department of Surgery and Anaesthetics

About The Department of Surgery and Anaesthetics
The Department of Surgery and Anaesthetics is one of the departments recently carved out of what was then the Division of Clinical Practice and Patient Care in the Faculty of Medicine at the NUST. It is a strong network of faculty and learners and traverses 2 of the major affiliated hospitals in Bulawayo i.e. The Mpilo Central Hospital and The United Bulawayo Hospital. The Department is currently in its nascent stages with expectation for expansion and growth in the near future. We have at the moment a complement of 8 full-time faculty complemented by at least 8 part-time lecturers. We are as a department are responsible for surgical teaching (in all specialties of Surgery and Anaesthesia) to the undergraduate medical students in the 4th year and the exit year in year six. Our surgical teaching is designed to complement those of the other clinical disciplines to produce a well-rounded general duty medical officer with sufficient knowledge and skills to be able to occupy and acquit with distinction the office of an intern in Surgery. The products of our training programme should also have sufficient knowledge and skills for future progress in surgery if they so choose.

Our vision, is to be adjudged using the well-established traditional metrics as a recognized centre for surgical training nationally, the subcontinent, continentally and ultimately globally.
 

Department Paediatrics and Child Health

Abot The Department Paediatrics and Child Health

Aim: the department aims to ground the student in solid principles of history taking examination and management of common Paediatric diseases and conditions. The learning shall be through instilling good clinical acumen, via lectures, tutorials, bedside teaching, seminars and presentations. At the end of it all we aim to produce a well-rounded cadre who can work well in the region and beyond. A cadre who can clerk, examine synthesize and manage both common and complex Paediatric conditions practicing evidence based Paediatrics and refer appropriately.
