PROJECT ISIGCINO
Project Isigcino is a youth-led climate awareness initiative spearheaded by BlueHorizon NUST, a group of eight Civil Engineering students from the National University of Science and Technology. The project was implemented under the City of Bulawayo Youth Climate Action Fund, in collaboration with Bloomberg Philanthropies. Project Isigcino addressed climate change through practical, community centred actions including tree planting, climate education, and environmental clean-up campaigns. Schools were deliberately selected as primary project sites to ensure long-term care of planted trees while fostering early climate consciousness among young people.
Through the project, a total of 60 trees were successfully planted across three sites: Prestige High School, Eastview High School, and NUST, where the project was officially launched. The team conducted three climate education workshops, exploring climate change from a youth perspective and emphasizing the responsibility of young people in safeguarding the planet. Additional outreach included a climate education day at Vulindlela Orphanage and a clean-up campaign in the Bulawayo CBD in December 2025. Among the project’s key achievements was the installation of three prototype green walls, showcasing innovative, nature based solutions for urban climate resilience.
