Boosting Industry-Academia Ties: NUST and Unki Mine Partner for Green Engineering
On March 26th, the National University of Science and Technology’s (NUST) Department of Civil and Water Engineering hosted a technical summit with Unki Mine to tackle sustainable mine waste management.
Driven by Zimbabwe’s Education 5.0 initiative, the meeting aimed to turn academic theory into industrial practice. The teams explored ways to minimise waste and recover valuable resources, focusing on turning mining byproducts into viable commercial solutions. Importantly, the session served as a hands-on masterclass for student engineers, giving them a front-row seat to solving high-stakes industry problems.
This engagement marks the beginning of a long-term alliance centred on applied research and innovation. By merging academic insight with industrial expertise, NUST and Unki Mine are set to drive sustainable progress across Zimbabwe’s mining landscape.
Key Takeaways from the Collaboration
- Bridging the Gap: Moving research from the lab to the mine site.
- Circular Economy: Focusing on waste reduction and resource recovery.
- Future-Proofing Talent: Providing students with real-world engineering experience.
- Long-Term Impact: Establishing a framework for ongoing technological development.
