NUST STEM Open day
The department also participates in NUST-STEM open day sessions. The participation is aimed at educating primary and high school students about materials engineering.
- Students are given demonstrations of modern technologies used in the department, including 3D printing, and introduced to how concepts from chemistry, physics and materials science are applied in engineering practice.
- Through interactive discussions, learners can explore how polymer materials are used in everyday products such as food packaging, bottles, uniforms, footwear and writing instruments. Real-world examples are used to demonstrate how materials engineering can address societal challenges. One example discusses the need for prosthetics, which are imported, whilst 3D printing technology and appropriate polymer materials could potentially be used to manufacture prosthetic devices locally, reducing reliance on imports.
