Empowering Future Engineers at the Bridge Building Competition

On 21 March 2026, the Department of Civil and Water Engineering participated in the Annual Bridge Building Competition held at Girls College, an initiative spearheaded by the Zimbabwe Institution of Engineers (ZIE) to nurture emerging engineering talent among secondary school learners. The department provided on-site academic mentorship and technical guidance, reinforcing its commitment to experiential learning and community engagement. Students from several local schools, including Mpopoma High, Petra College Senior, Dominican Convent, Milton High, and Townsend Girls’ High, showcased innovation and structural problem-solving skills through model bridge design and construction. Through this engagement, the department strengthened the link between secondary education and professional engineering practice, exposing participants to industry-aligned standards while promoting creativity, teamwork, and practical application of engineering principles. The event, supported by partners such as Bakers Inn, Bluehills Camp, Golcotta, and Autodesk, highlighted a shared commitment to developing the next generation of engineers and advancing STEM education through hands-on learning initiatives.
