Ncube appointed Deputy Bursar – Finance and Administration

SEASONED accountant and one of the pioneers of NUST, Mr Lawrence Ncube, has been appointed Deputy Bursar – Finance and Administration, with effect from 1 June 2020.

Before his latest appointment, Mr Ncube was serving as the Principal Accountant responsible for Salaries and Benefits since 2010.

In accepting his appointment, Mr Ncube said his passion for effective systems in administration will be the key driving force in executing his new duty.

“I believe effective systems are the backbone of conducive working environs, so this is what I intend to contribute to the department,” said Ncube.

He joined NUST in 1991 as an Accounts Clerk, and rose through the ranks over the years to his recent appointment.

Mr Ncube holds an MSc in Banking and Financial Services, and a Bachelor of Commerce in Banking from the National University of Science and Technology (NUST).

He is currently studying towards a Doctor of Philosophy in Business with the University of Botswana researching on Pension Funds.

To sharpen his skills in the profession, he also attained a Certificate in Retirement Funds Trusteeship from the Insurance Institute of Zimbabwe, a requirement in Zimbabwe for all practising Pension Fund Professionals and a Certificate in Basics of Business from UNISA.

In the year 2018 Mr Ncube’s abstract was accepted for a paper presentation at a National Annual Pension Fund Conference, the Zimbabwe Association of Pension Funds (ZAPF) where he represented NUST.

The paper was titled “An Overview of Pension Fund Governance and Performance in Developing Market Economies” Excerpts of the presentation are awaiting publication in the ZAPF magazine.

His vast experience spans over two decades in the financials field, whilst his commitment and dedication to his duties has been evident in the various posts he has held within NUST, and in other organisations.

He made a brief stint as Acting Regional Manager of a Non-Governmental Organisation between 2008 and 2009, where he also handled the Finance portfolio. 

With regards to corporate governance, Mr Ncube has shared his expertise in different organisations and is still active in playing a role in the community. He completed two terms as Board Member – Finance for Emthonjeni Women’s Forum.

Given his experience and dedication, he was appointed in a similar capacity in the Hope For a Child in Christ (HOCIC) Foundation Board, where he has been appointed as Chairman of the same board from January 2020. He is also serving as Vice-Chairperson of the St. Padrepio Catholic Church Parish Council, Emakhandeni in Bulawayo.

At NUST, before his recent appointment, he was leading the NUST Administrators Association, a role which entailed advocating for the welfare of the middle-management staff.

As Deputy Bursar responsible for Finance and Administration, Mr Ncube now has the task of managing NUST investments as well as cash flow of the institution.

His skills will be required in preparing and monitoring departmental budgets as well as monitoring the financial performance of these.

Being an academic institution, the Deputy Bursar is expected to manage specific research funds as well as postgraduate funds, in addition to the general administration of the Bursar’s Department in liaison with the Bursar.

Mr Ncube is married to Portia and has three sons, Leeroy Thamsanqa, Dalubuhle Martin and Enzokuhle Gabriel.

He fills the post left vacant by Mr Reaboka Noko who resigned last year.
