Information for Prospective Students

What is Applied Mathematics?
Applied mathematics is a branch of mathematics that deals with mathematical methods that find use in science, engineering, business, computer science, and industry. Thus, applied mathematics is a combination of mathematical science and specialized knowledge. The term "applied mathematics" also describes the professional specialty in which mathematicians work on practical problems by formulating and studying mathematical models. In the past, practical applications have motivated the development of mathematical theories, which then became the subject of study in pure mathematics where abstract concepts are studied for their own sake. The activity of applied mathematics is thus intimately connected with research in pure mathematics. Mathematics plays a major role in the bottom line of industrial organizations, and helps companies perform better in today’s data-driven marketplace.

The application of mathematics can occur in any field. Examples are:

  • Einstein invented the general theory of relativity by applying methods from differential geometry to the structure of space and time;

  • Black, Scholes and Merton wrote down a fundamental formula for the price of an option, by applying the theory of random walks to the stock market; and

  • Shannon characterized an information source in mathematical terms, and in so doing laid the quantitative basis for modern information technology.
