The Department of Finance is one of six departments in the Faculty of Commerce. The department currently offers two 4-year undergraduate degree programmes and two 2-year post-graduate degree programmes. The undergraduate degree programmes are the B.Comm (Honors) in Finance and the B.Comm (Honors) in Fiscal Studies, while the post-graduate programmes are the Master of Science in Finance and Investments and the Master of Science in Fiscal studies.

Staffed with more than 10 academic staff members and three non-academic staff, the department strives to produce well-trained graduates for the benefit of industry, commerce and the public sector. Currently, the department has over 600 undergraduate students and about 120 postgraduate students. Most of the graduates of the department have pursued careers in the financial services sector, and others have settled in government. An increasing number are also starting and running small businesses. There is scope for graduates of the Fiscal Studies programmes to find their way into regional organizations such as COMESA and SADC. The Department is affiliated to the International Network of Customs Universities (INCU).
 


Undergraduate Programmes
 
BACHELOR OF COMMERCE HONORS DEGREE IN FINANCE

ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates must have the following qualifications:-
Five ‘O’ level passes including English and Mathematics (A, B, or C Grades) At least two ‘A’ level passes.

A Level passes in at least two of the following subjects: Economics, Management of Business, Accounting and Mathematics.

There is also provision for mature entry for persons who may not have the appropriate academic qualifications for entry but who have suitable or relevant post-school experience and who satisfy the University and the Department of their ability to complete a degree course satisfactorily.

PRE-REQUISITES
A candidate must have passed Financial Accounting IA and IB before proceeding to Financial Accounting IIA and IIB courses.

A candidate must have passed Principles of Microeconomics and Principles of Macroeconomics before proceeding to Financial Markets.

A candidate must have passed Corporate Finance and Financial Mathematics before proceeding to Part IV courses.


 
BACHELOR OF COMMERCE HONORS DEGREE IN FISCAL STUDIES

ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least two `A’ level passes At least 2 “A” level passes for non-ZIMRA employees.
  • At least 5 “O” levels including English and Mathematics and a Diploma in Taxation plus two years experience for ZIMRA employees.

There is also provision for mature entry for persons who may not have the appropriate academic qualifications for entry but who have suitable or relevant post-school experience and who satisfy the University and the Department of their ability to complete  degree course satisfactorily.

 Post Graduate Programs
 MASTER OF SCIENCE [MSc] IN FINANCE AND INVESTMENTS

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
To be considered for admission to the MSc programme, a candidate should, normally, hold a good Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in either Finance or Accounting or Economics or Banking or Business Studies or Insurance or Commerce.  In addition, the prerequisite degree should have included the following courses: Corporate Finance or Financial Management or Managerial Finance or Business Finance, [or equivalent], Quantitative Analysis for Business [or statistics], Accounting 1 and Principles of Economics.

DURATION OF PROGRAMME AND DELIVERY
The programme is currently being offered on a part time, block release basis over a minimum period of 24 months of which a minimum of 6 months is for the dissertation. The academic year normally begins in August and ends in July. Registration of students is conducted in August of every year


MASTER OF SCIENCE IN FISCAL STUDIES

This is a new programme introduced by the University under the Department of Finance to meet the following objectives:
  1. To provide a distinct set of knowledge, skills and behaviours that are needed to serve the diverse stakeholders in the field of public finance/revenue/economics.
  2. To provide internationally recognized standards for the professional development of managers in the areas of public finance/revenue/economics.
  3. To provide a global resource for the government and the private sector, as well as regional governments.
  4. To provide a knowledge-base for those students who wish to pursue further studies and research in the field of public finance/revenue/economics, particularly, trade, customs and taxes.


ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

To be considered for admission to the Master of Science in Fiscal Studies programme, a candidate should normally hold:
  • A good honors degree in a commercial field, specifically, Fiscal; Public Finance; Public Economics; Customs; Taxation; Economics; Finance; Accounting; Business Studies; Commerce; or their equivalents; or
  • A Bachelors degree in any discipline plus an acceptable postgraduate diploma or professional qualifications from an accredited university/institution with a Fiscal-, Public Finance-, Public Economics-, Customs-, Taxation-, Business-, Finance-, Economics-, Accounting-, or Commerce-related content.  In addition, the candidate should possess relevant experience; or
  • An Honours degree in any discipline, plus extensive experience in the areas of Fiscal, Public Finance, Public Economics, Economics, Finance, or equivalents, subject to approval by the senate on approval by the faculty.  

DURATION OF PROGRAMME AND DELIVERY SYSTEMS

The programme will normally be on a 24-month part-time basis, to be conducted from the National University of Science and Technology. The programme will be presented in modular format over its duration, consisting of 13 full weeks of delivery (56 contact hours per module).  Students also have to complete a research dissertation.
